Hi, I’m Elena Martinez, and I’m so glad you’re here.
If cooking has ever felt like a performance where everyone else got the script and you got handed a wooden spoon and a vague sense of panic, welcome. PlateDo is the place I built for real people who want food that tastes amazing without requiring a culinary degree, a five-hour window, or a drawer full of fancy gadgets.
How I got here
I grew up in a bustling, multi-generational home where the kitchen was the center of gravity. There was always something simmering, someone asking, “Did you taste this yet?”, and at least one person hovering near the stove because the best stories seemed to happen there.
In my early twenties, I chased the rush of restaurant life, working the line in fast-paced bistros and later managing a local bakery. I loved the craft, the rhythm, and the quiet pride of a tray of perfect pastries cooling on a rack. But I also noticed something: the gap between professional kitchens and home kitchens can feel enormous, and it doesn't have to.
What I really wanted was to stand next to people in their own kitchens and say, “You’re doing great. Here’s why this works. And if you don’t have that ingredient, here are two other ways.” That’s what pulled me into food writing and recipe development, and it’s why PlateDo exists.
What PlateDo is about
PlateDo is my recipe home base, built around a simple mission: make great cooking feel doable. That means recipes that are cozy, confident, and tested with real-life variables in mind.
Here’s what you can expect when you cook from PlateDo:
- Foolproof steps. Clear directions, realistic timing, and the little details that keep you from guessing.
- The why behind the how. Not a lecture, just the key reason a technique matters so you can make good choices on the fly.
- Flexible ingredients. Smart substitutions for when the store is out, your budget is tight, or you simply hate cilantro.
- Food that fits your life. Weeknight dinners, weekend projects, and recipes designed to leave you with leftovers you actually want.
My recipe promise
I test recipes like a friend who really, really wants you to win dinner.
Most recipes you see here are cooked through at least twice, timed start to finish, and re-tested with a few common swaps so you’re not the one discovering the weak spot on a busy Tuesday.
I pay attention to the spots where things usually go sideways: when the onions burn because the heat is too high, when a sauce breaks because it was rushed, when baked goods dry out because many home ovens are miscalibrated. You’ll see notes like “what you’re looking for” and “what to do if this happens,” because confidence comes from knowing what’s normal and what’s fixable.
And I’ll always respect your time. If a recipe takes 45 minutes, it’s because it actually takes about 45 minutes, not because I pretended chopping an onion counts as “prep: 2 minutes.”
What I’ll help with
Over the years, I’ve learned that most home cooking wins come from a handful of repeatable skills. On PlateDo, you’ll see those skills show up again and again, in a way that feels natural.
- Build flavor without extra fuss. Browning, deglazing, using salt early, and knowing when to finish with acid.
- Make peace with substitutions. I’ll tell you what swaps cleanly and what changes the final texture.
- Use leftovers like a pro. Because a roast chicken should turn into tomorrow’s tacos, soup, or salad, not guilt in the back of the fridge.
- Bake with less stress. Especially if you’ve ever thought, “Why does everyone else’s bread look like that?”
Start here
If you want an easy win, start with one of these: 15-minute dinners, one-pan meals, cozy soups, or baking basics. Pick whatever sounds comforting, read through the steps once, then cook it like we’re doing it together.
If something goes a little off? You’re still going to eat well. Most mistakes have a fix, and the rest make good stories.
When I’m not testing
You can usually find me scouring local farmers’ markets, feeding my five-year-old sourdough starter like it’s a slightly dramatic pet, or hosting messy but joyful Sunday dinners. I’m also the person who shows up with “just a few containers” for leftovers and somehow leaves with a whole meal for tomorrow.
Welcome to PlateDo
Thanks for letting me into your kitchen. I hope PlateDo helps you make food that feels like home, whether you’re cooking for a crowd or just for yourself.
